Partnering With Top Notch Talent

A couple weeks my company Learn To Move Academy partnered with Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine (TISM) to bring the best of fundamental movement development programs and sports medicine. Together we are educating the New Orleans metro area about the benefits of long term athletic development.  #school #teacher #student #athlete #fitness #parents

TISM are top notch doctors, physical therapists, and athletic trainers who truly care about their patients and educating the community.  They see patients when other healthcare facilities can't make appointments for weeks and months away.  Today they helped make a presentation to the Greater New Orleans Collaborative of Charter Schools at Hynes Charter School in New Orleans, and provided outstanding insight into the surgery curve on overuse injuries.  It is a blessing to be endorsed by such a great organization who shares the same believes and desires to give back to the elementary and middle school communities.  So much is made about high school sports, but not many talk about how to develop a child from the beginning.  We didn't all start with running a 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds or dunking a basketball at the age of 6.  We all started figuring out how to move in space and be courteous of others sharing the space.

Find a business, organization, or group of people who share similar believes and the sky is the limit!

Failure is Only Failure When you Don't Start

In early August a well known healthcare company in south Louisiana pulled out their support of seminars my company, Learn To Move Academy, had setup for 2 parish school boards and over 20 catholic elementary schools.  What do you do?  Cancel the opportunity to educate PE teachers and get new customers or roll with the experience and knowledge we have?  #risktaking #business #goals #courage #lesbrown

Driving to our first seminar we received the email the large healthcare provider could not make it.  We tightened up our belts and made the presentation to 15 public school PE teachers in St. Bernard Parish.  After the presentation our contact said she was interested in pursuing purchasing options for her school and a few others.  We emailed a proposal for every school in the system and stayed in touch over the next few weeks.  Time went by and red tape held up the process but we had faith.

On September 8, the school board contacted us and agreed to purchase the program for all 6 of their elementary schools.  If we folded up our tents and did not do the seminar after being thrown to the wolves, we never could reap the rewards.  When you have a dream, follow it and do not let mole hills become mountains in your quest for greatness.

The Obesity Strategy

#childhoodobesity #parents #teachertuesday #obesity #health
September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in the United States.  Here is a great blog by British author Kevin Peake The Obesity Strategy, in which he details some issues and suggestions for United Kingdom schools.  While schools have a significant effect on childhood obesity, let us not forget that obesity is not genetic but learned.  Children do not drive to the grocery store or restaurants and pay for food with their own hard earned cash.  Parents are 100% responsible for what they feed their children, and with smart phones, instant education on to what is healthy or not is available at your fingertips.  Before pointing the finger outside, take a look inside and see where does that finger need to be pointed.

Digital Learning in Schools

Image result for teachers using technology

As the owner of a digital physical education company, I am always learning about the different strategies and methods schools are implementing technology.  The people at eSchoolNews.com put out a great article about how to improve a school district's digital leadership.#motivationmonday #technology #learning #school #backtoschool

Most people don't think of physical education being a digital learning subject, but Learn To Move Academy is a pioneer in web based tool for teachers.  Everyone lives on their phones and tablets now, so why not give PE teachers something to use that's mobile and can be used on the court or field.  With budget cutbacks, PE is one of the first subjects to have reduced funding and time.  It becomes an after thought when physical fitness is primary in life itself.  With no books and binders to take up space, why not invest in more digital resources to be accessed on field trips, in the classroom, and at home.  If not for digital, you couldn't read this blog from anywhere in the world.

What Is The Cost of Winning?

As Vince Lombardi said, "Winning is not a sometime thing, it is an all the time thing."  And for the most part, he is right.  But as parents, when you you draw the line with telling your kids winning is the most important thing over all else?  #wednesdaywisdom #winningwednesday #wednesdaymotivation #champions

Does winning become the dominant theme over sportsmanship and respect for yourself and others?  I am a huge sports fan and avid athlete so winning is extremely important on a personal level.  It is a difficult decision with some parents in teaching their kids to win vs win at all costs.  When the game is over, it is over and life resumes it's regularly schedule program.  Teach your kids to do their best and have a winning attitude, and combine it with humility and sportsmanship so everyone wins in the end.

Giving Your Best Effort

We always tell kids to give their best effort, but what makes them do so?  Is it internal motivation or the culture they are in?  Today I want to give a shout out to the 5th & 6th grade classes at St. Cletus Elementary School in Gretna, LA.  They gave 100% effort in their pre performance testing for Learn To Move Academy. #champions #winners #teachers #leadership

I have seen children of all ages in various environments go through sports practices and PE classes.  Some kids do want to perform to their highest level, others don't care and nothing you say or do changes it.  I firmly believe a culture of empowerment and doing your best starts at the top.  Whether it is in business, sports, or school, how the leader encourages and empowers those below him or her is reflected in their efforts.  If you want your followers (whoever they are) to give 100%, then you give them 100% of yourself.

Exercise Can Help Reduce Anxiety in Teens and Children

Unhappiness has taken over

We have all heard exercise can be a good outlet for anger, but what about anxiety?  The people at Paradigm Treatment Centers have a great article on how exercise can help teens manage stress and anxiety.  Check out their blog post Paradigm Treatment Center-Malibu.  #paradigmtreatmentcenters #exercise #teenanxiety

Telling your kids it's ok to run around the block or punch a pillow or do push ups till you can't do anymore are great ways to blow off steam.  By having exercise and healthy eating as part of their lifestyle, kids can more easily cope with stress.  With the whole family living a healthy, active lifestyle, relationships within the family tend to be more positive.

For ways to include more students at your child's school PE class for improved behavior, go to www.ltmacademy.com

Back Into the Homework Groove is Not Fun!

Image result for homework meme images

Back to school means back to homework.  BOOOOOO!!!! Yes, kids AND parents have to get back into the homework groove, but how?  I found a site called www.lockettlearningsystems.com that has some great ideas to help with study skills.  #backtoschool #children #parenting #teachers

Time management is the key everything, homework definitely included.  As parents, it is our job to set time aside and stick to that time everyday for our kids to finish their homework.  Yes, kids moan, cry, and complain, but it does not matter.  When they get to college and we aren't there to make them study, it is this time management skill that teaches them that school work comes before play.  What are some tips you have to help with time management?

Getting Organized for Back to School

How do teachers, parents, and students get organized for back to school? Planners, online programs, apps, Oh My!!  Here are some online ideas from Educational Technology & Mobile Learning.  #teachers #education #backtoschool #parenting #students

Some people very much need to use a pen and paper to write down ideas and lists, but then where do you put these scraps of paper.  Others prefer using apps on their phones and tablets, but how much memory are they taking up.  Maybe it is a combination of phone calendar and tracking in a small notebook.  The more jobs, kids, classes, etc. you have, the more in need of a simple organization system to track your commitments is necessary.  Find what works for you, and be consistent.  Life has a way of organizing itself when you give it proper attention.

It's All About the Eating, Not the Drugs for Heart Disease

I follow Dr. Michael Greger and love his honesty!  Read his article Eliminate 90% of Heart Disease Risk to learn it's all about what you do and don't eat! #MotivationMonday #hearthealth #healthyeating #diet #health

As a personal trainer I tell my clients 80% nutrition 20% exercise for best results.  Most people think it's the other way around, but you can't out exercise a bad diet!

Learn, Apply, & Understand Seminars

Learn To Move Academy put on a free seminar series called Learn, Apply, & Understand for public and private schools in south Louisiana this week. #physicaleducation #teachers #school #students

PE teachers from across south Louisiana were invited to participate in a free seminar to learn about long term athletic development.  Topics included injury reduction, nutrition, and a live demo of how to implement long term athletic development into their classes.  "I had no idea the impact teaching movement skills instead of only sports skills makes on kids," said one New Orleans area teacher.

If your school wants to truly teach healthy, active lifestyle habits and movements to their students, contact Learn To Move Academy at learntomoveacademy@gmail.com, for your free webinar.  Follow us on Facebook

Can Parents Cause Overuse Injuries?

You ask you child if they are hurt or can they go back into the game.  He or she they are fine and back in they go.  Are they really injured and need to rest or making a bigger deal out of a small scratch?  It's a fine line parents and coaches walk to teach kids toughness without exposing them to further serious injury. Movement fundamental programs like Learn To Move Academy can help prevent overuse injuries through proper training, but if rest is what they need, movement programs and practice drills aren't the answer.  Listen to your children's words and watch their body language, remember it is their body and not yours taking the pounding.

Have You Ever Assessed Your Functional Movements?

What are functional movements?  You hear the term often about exercises in the gym, but what does it exactly mean?

Functional movements relate to the way our body moves in normal, daily life.  Have you ever assessed your movements?  Here are the seven measurements of the functional movement screen.  They are equally important for children to be capable of besides adults.  You don't need all of the equipment shown to try them at home, just do your best with what you have like a broom.

Check out Learn To Move Academy Functional Movement Screen to see how you can grade yourself and your family.

"Ok, son, how were your grades this report card?"
"Well, dad, I got B's in science, history, and math, a C in language...but I got an A in P.E.!"

An A in physical education.  Doesn't everyone get an A in P.E.?  What are exactly are you graded on in P.E.?
Unfortunately there is no simple answer.  Most states grade just on participation and have no set skills and physical development standards for students to have an equal measure like other core subjects.  Is it a wonder about childhood inactivity being high when schools do not have set programs to teach kids about healthy lifestyle habits.  Each school, public and private, leaves it up to the individual teachers to develop and follow a true physical education program and none has any accountability to notify parents how their children are doing.
Maybe it is time we have some uniformity in how schools grade physical development the same way they do math, language arts, and science.

Games vs movement fundamentals, which do we teach first?  The story is similar to if the chicken or the egg came first.  What do you think?
In the United States we believe in teaching games, while in Europe, Canada, and Australia they believe in teaching movements first.  Watch your kids run.  Do they run in an efficient manner, or are legs and arms flying all over the place?  Where and how did they learn to run?  Should someone teach them how to run properly and efficiently before playing soccer, basketball, or lacrosse?
Henry Ford said, "Where most manufacturers find themselves quicker to make a change in the product than in the method of manufacturing-we follow exactly the opposite course."  If you apply the rationale to games vs movement fundamentals, Henry Ford's success over 100 years later shows great evidence to teaching movements (methods of manufacturing) before games (product).
